Until 2007 Obama’s literary agent had been stating in Obama’s bio that he was born in Kenya. Here it is from the publicist’s website…

BARACK OBAMA is the junior Democratic senator from Illinois and was the dynamic keynote speaker at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. He was also the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. He was born in Kenya to an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister and was raised in Indonesia, Hawaii, and Chicago. His first book, DREAMS FROM MY FATHER: A STORY OF RACE AND INHERITANCE, has been a long time New York Times bestseller.

I have been watching the hype concerning the Facebook IPO and I have to wonder how the popular site will translate to profit in the long run. Just because it is popular does not mean that it will ultimately result in huge advertising profit. I have to wonder if investors are jumping in for the “cool” factor without really looking at the investment fundamentals.

I have heard that GM has recently dropped it’s paid advertising on Facebook because the amount paid did not translate to better sales. I suspect that others will follow suit.

What do you think?

When the AHA Museum announced that they would be moving from the downtown area most comments at the LEG site chimed in with a chorus o “The old Big Bear site”!

OK, let’s look at that site objectively. I don’t know the size of the old Big Bear, but let’s say it’s 40,000. Even if they could get an absolutely GREAT rate of $5/SF that would make the lease on the property $200,000/year. That’s about $548/DAY. That’s for 365 days per year. If they are closed on some days the cost/day that they are open would increase.

I haven’t been into the store in many years but you can count on millions of dollars to rehab the building. Add on electricity, employees, employee benefits, employee taxes, heat for the rather large building, insurance, common area maintenance (maintain parking lot), phones, worker’s comp, unemployment insurance, water, sewage, maintenance, cleaning supplies, and on and on.

At current traffic levels the cost of admission to the museum would have to be AT LEAST $20/kid simply to break even. Will people take the kiddies for $20 a head? It would get pretty expensive if a family has multiple kids.

Here are some comments made by reader 43130 regarding a recent Lancaster Eagle Gazette article…

Click for original article.

The city is planning to have a conference in June of key city personnel and council members to discuss and brainstorm ideas about how to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

(why not open it up to some citizens and key employers of the city? why just key city personnel and council members?)

—————————————–

Ken Culver- “About 15 years ago, I was on the Board of Trustees at Fairfield Medical Center where we conducted a similar conference involving the board, administration and key physicians,” Culver wrote. “There were about 25 of us in attendance, and the session was led by a facilitator, Professor Zale Maxwell, of Ohio University-Lancaster. It proved to be quite useful in helping us think outside the box. Some ideas were nonstarters, while others proved useful and resulted in positive changes.”

(I’d like to know what idea’s proved useful at FMC? Are those ideas in place now?)

————————————

Ken Culver “All the talk from the state is continuing decreases and the taxpayers of Lancaster voted down a tax increase levy pretty convincingly a year ago,” Culver said. “So we are going to have to do more with less. This is a way to look at our options.”

Duh!!!! How many failed tax levy’s did it take for him to figure this one out? Wonder how much it will cost to rent the place that they decide to hold this conference at? Oh, then there will be the catered lunch that they all eat.. I’ll bet you a years worth of city income taxes that they have it at the new dining place where the Elks was.. (The Lodge?)

Bottom line: Isn’t this why we elect our city officials? Because they campaign and say they can do this and that to gain our vote? Then , when they get into office and realize they CAN’T do this and that they want to set up a “brainstorming” session to come up with ideas. Lancaster needs to get rid of the Mayor’s position and hire a city manager who has experience in running a city like a business. Somebody who has no local ties. That person can be interviewed and hired by city council.

Have you wondered why not a single Wallstreeter has not been prosecuted over the financial meltdown? Could it have something to do with huge contributions that Wall Street firms have made to the Obama campaign? They have contributed more to Obama than any other candidate. Bain Capital contributed twice as much to the Obama campaign than they did to the Romney campaign even though Romney founded the firm. Really? I thought the GOP was in the pocket of Wall Street firms!

This ought to be interesting!
