Just Report The Weather!

I have to tell you that I am REALLY sick of the media hype over the weather. I guess it’s an easy story for the media not requiring any real reporting. Yesterday Fox reported that Lancaster had gotten 13″ of snow. Ummm, where? I’m guessing they found the biggest drift they could and measured it. It looked a lot closer to 4 inches to me. It always seems that they need to “enhance” the actual weather. They love the “wind chill” gimmick. Wind chill is the effect of the combination of wind and cold on bare skin. If you are wearing clothes wind chill does not apply. (Safety tip: CFG does recommend wearing clothes outside in the Winter). Similarly it is the effect on skin, nothing else. Wind chill has no effect on cars.

Wouldn’t it be nice to just hear the weather forecast without the hype? Give us the real facts and be done with it.

Crabby’s Downtown Plan

Yesterday there was (finally) an article in the LEG stating that there will be groups forming with the purpose of formulating long term plans for the downtown area. I have had a long term interest in the downtown so I do have a few thoughts along these lines. Ok, here is my plan…

I envision the downtown area as an “entertainment district” with restaurants and bars and a few other appropriate shops. Anchoring the district will be a multi-function facility that could be used for a large variety of functions including concerts during festival as well as throughout the rest of the year, weddings and wedding receptions, teen dances, conferences, banquets, and other events. I would love to see a regular feature be an teen dance where Lancaster’s garage bands could show off their talent and teens could hang out without spending a ton of money.

Possible candidates would have to include the Elks - already nicely decorated, large, and downtown. Another candidate would have to be the Art & Clay building - nicely decorated and centrally located. There are, however, other possible locations. Functions would be catered with downtown caterers like Four Reasons and Tammijo’s.

Financing of the multi-function facility: I would like to see the multi-function building to be locally and widely financed by direct subscriptions from local residents perhaps with a maximum investment of say a thousand dollars. I believe that financing the building in this manner would promote wide public “ownership” of the facility - a place owned by and for the people of Lancaster. In addition to a share of profit from the venture the share-owners could also be subject to facility discounts - discounted “member” concert tickets and reduced rental rates.

A Plan for Downtown

The LEG announced a plan to determine what downtown should be. Click here. Congratulations! I have been saying that for a long time. Here is my first post on the subject.

I just hope this does not turn into a three year $100,000 project.

Liquor is No Longer Quicker

Once a year I go out and buy my one and only bottle of hard liquor for the year - always a bottle of Scotch. I like to select a mid-priced single malt. Lancaster’s one and only liquor store had a very nice selection to choose from. HAD is the key word here. Since the liquor store has been moved to a middle of the store shack within the confines of Giant Eagle the selection has declined - a lot! I would guess that the selection of Scotch is now a quarter of what it was at the old place. I would guess that the selection of other adult beverages have also declined a similar proportion.

Having grown up a Hoosier I find Ohio’s liquor laws strange in the first place, but to have only a single liquor store in a city of this size is doubly strange. Our sole source of spirits being so limited in selection makes the whole matter triply strange or is that strange cubed.

I guess if I want my beloved single malt I will have to travel out of town. What a shame!
