I have to tell you that I am REALLY sick of the media hype over the weather. I guess it’s an easy story for the media not requiring any real reporting. Yesterday Fox reported that Lancaster had gotten 13″ of snow. Ummm, where? I’m guessing they found the biggest drift they could and measured it. It looked a lot closer to 4 inches to me. It always seems that they need to “enhance” the actual weather. They love the “wind chill” gimmick. Wind chill is the effect of the combination of wind and cold on bare skin. If you are wearing clothes wind chill does not apply. (Safety tip: CFG does recommend wearing clothes outside in the Winter). Similarly it is the effect on skin, nothing else. Wind chill has no effect on cars.
Wouldn’t it be nice to just hear the weather forecast without the hype? Give us the real facts and be done with it.

“Wind chill has no effect on cars.”
Sure it does. If you don’t have enough antifreeze for below 20° and take your car a few blocks, it will work fine. Drive it up the freeway where “wind” (your forward speed) is 50mph, and you’ll freeze the water in the radiator within 5 miles, causing an overheat. Happened to me. Let it set for a few minutes, and drove back home at a slower speed with no overheat.
In any case, definitely agree about the weather non-news. Heard on the radio yesterday that Columbus got a record 9.5″. I hope they meant that was a record for the date, because I’ve seen lots of snows deeper than that.

I hate the weather reports that come on TV and that is all they want to talk about for like 2 hours. They keep saying we will have more at noon or 5 or 11 or whatever. Yes there is weather outside, there is always weather of some type out there. You don’t need to take tv shows off to tell me there is weather outside. Do it during commerical breaks if you need to.
Just a pet peeve of mine.

At one time wasn’t there a radio station that used to give “Accu-Window” weather? They used to look outside and say “it’s snowing” or “it’s raining”.
Frankly, I wonder what percentage of accidents are caused by the media. They create such a panic that when many begin to slide they slam on the brakes and lock the wheels. Next thing you know they are in the ditch.

The media can be blamed for many things, the inability whatsoever by so many here to know how to drive on snow and ice is not one of them. I do have to say kudo’s to the road crews in Rush Creek Township, they had the plows out quick! And South Central as well, only about 9 hours of outage, I expected worse.

If the media would spend the time telling people how to drive on ice that they do telling you to tune in to their next inaccurate weather report, that would be useful.

some made a valid point to me…
we got 13 inches of snowfall, but the rain may have melted/destroyed/lowered that total to what you see on the ground as aftermath.
Forgot weather 101 took a woman to make me remember…

Chris, you are right. We live north of town a bit, and it apparently was just a couple of degrees colder. When I left town Friday night at 5:30 there was only an inch or so of snow on the ground. At home we easily had 4 inches at that time. I would say we had a good 8-9 inches total anyway, because in my front yard the snow is almost up to my knees, and this wasn’t in drift areas.

Good, you’re up. You can come shovel me out!

No. The only reason I am up is because I had to hitch a ride to work with hubby, 5 hours early.

I just saw a classic weather report on CNN. It was titled “Snowmaggedon” on the bottom of the screen. A guys stading in NYC stating at various points “it is not snowing now, but…” then a little later “drifts and snow piles up to two feet”. Pl-ease
