Frankly, I don’t eat out very often anymore. I can cook better food at home and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper. We have a pizza every couple weeks and go get breakfast at Waffle House maybe once a month and I still enjoy Teriyaki. Over the last month I did re-sample food from McDonald’s AND Wendy’s. I re-discovered why I don’t eat there.
I’m just wondering what you think of the Lancaster restaurant scene. Heard of any restaurants coming to town? Expect any to close? Do you recommend any restaurants in town? Have you tried Jimmy John’s, Taverna Bravo, Raisin’ Cain’s? Will they make it?

Taverna Bravo?
Where’s that?
Where Mauger’s used to be. Looks like the same menu as Mediterranean on Main used to have. Mediterranean on Main moved out to Memorial where TammiJo’s used to be in the plaza.
Got it, and I now remember you mentioning that before.
Thanks.

This is not meant to be a joke, and I apologize if this hijacks the conversation. If you want to delete it, please do so.
Considering what I have been reading about electricity rates and health insurance premiums increasing rapidly, I will not be surprised if Lancaster sees quite a few restaurants close.
In terms of other spending, Mrs. L. and I were about to buy a new car from Taylor, and I then heard the projected increase for my health insurance. A new car is now on hold for the foreseeable future.
The biggest effect that Obamacare will have on restaurants is that there will be more part time workers and less full timers.
The end of the 2% tax holiday of Social Security taxes will most certainly have a big effect on restaurant sales. Restaurant sales are from disposable income and if less is available less will be spent.
Word is that Taverna Bravo just took the entire MedOnMain menu and copied it. That doesn’t mean it’s the same food.
They had a Jimmy Johns in Athens when I went to school there and I remember liking it quite a bit. The bread was not as thick as I recall; fairly simple. Better meat to bread ratio. Otherwise, not a great difference to the other chain sub shops. I would try it out if I were you, though.
McDonald’s? Wendy’s? Is a Lancaster version of these stores any different than any other U.S. location?
Nope, they suck nationwide. Actually, worldwide.
I have never seen a crowd at Jimmy John’s. I’m betting they don’t last the year.
You have to wonder if TWO Mediterranean places with essentially the same menu can make it in Lancaster.
I have been eating at PIZZA EXPRESS alot lately and find their pizza and subs to be very good.. It’s in the Drive-thru next to Taco Bell on E. Main St. They will deliver anything from their drive-thru as well. Aside from Pink Cricket, it’s the only decent place on the east side to get a pizza.

I think you might be right about Jimmy John’s.
What also baffles me is that someone wants to turn the old Mexican restaurant next door into retail space – as if we don’t have already have enough empty buildings.
Restaurant Lover
The old mexican Restaurant is owned buy Commercial Properties, AKA Lloyd Helber, who also owns the building housing Jimmy John”s. He also ownes A-One Storage, The shops at Ety Road, recently expanded, and many more. Lloyd has the midus touch. I wouldn’t ever bet against his judgement. If Jimmy John’s folds it will be their financial loss, not his. And thats my opinion.
I made the same comment to my wife a couple of weeks ago about Jimmy John’s… she pointed out that they do offer delivery and that may be a significant part of their business. I personally have yet to eat there, though I thought quality was good when I did eat once at a Columbus location.
Lloyd IS betting that he won’t end up with an empty building.
Opinionated:
I think you’re right about Lloyd. I’ve known him for quite a few years, and he is one of the brightest men in Lancaster, as well as Ohio.
I was unaware that the property was his. That changes things a bit, doesn’t it?
Recently ate at Mediterranean on Main for the first time. Dinnertime. It seemed fairly busy for a Tuesday night. Several families. Got a veggie Gyro, order of spanikopita and iced tea and the tab was about $12. The help could not have been nicer or more attentive. It was not bad. Could not call the portions generous. The “appetizer”/ spanikopita- I was actually kind of shocked at. For $4.95, it was just two little triangles of spinach filled dough- no bigger than a square of american cheese on a saucer. Friends platter with a steak and salad was upwards of $16-$17. Can’t really complain- These are about the going prices locally. But how do folks do it more than once as month or so. And an entire family!!!
Whoops! That last post was for the NEW Mediterranean on 33! (In the old KANES site.) It was nice, but pricey.
